THE STORY:

Join the Genrosity Global team as we do our part to bring access to clean water, adequate sanitation facilities and proper hygiene training to villages in Cameroon, Africa...

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Our project this year is focused in Batibo, a village located in the Northwest region of Cameroon. Batibo comprises of 22 conjoining villages with a surface area of 160 square miles. Our work will enable about 40,000 people to gain access to safe water and effective sanitation. The implementing partner for this project is the Living Green Foundation & Atlantic Drilling company Limited.

Poor land productivity, health, education, water supply and sanitation coverage, alongside low income and poor infrastructure makes Batibo one of the poorest parts of the Northwest region of Cameroon.

We recorded that only 35% of the population had access to a safe water supply and sanitation facilities respectively. Most of the traditional water sources are inaccessible, often unreliable and unsafe to use. On average, people living in rural areas have to travel between one to three to these water sources. The water shortage in the area is particularly problematic for women, who do most of the water collection. The lack of good water sources with proximity to dwellings makes school activities for the youth. They have to cover long distances everyday fetching water before and after school, making it very difficult concentrate and perform well in school. Most of these children are regular visitors to the Batibo hospital due to water-borne illnesses.

There is a general lack of awareness and practice of personal hygiene or environmental sanitation, with most community members not washing their hands after going to the toilet or before preparing food. The majority of communities do not have latrines or defined sites for refuse disposal. In most of the villages, it is not unusual for livestock and humans to share a living space and often there is no separate room designated as a kitchen. These factors all lead to high incidences of bacterial and diarrheal diseases.
