Global Water Crisis Today, 1 in 6 people around the world lack access to safe drinking water. Four million people die each year from preventable water-‐related diseases, and 90% of those deaths are children under five. In northern Ghana, 20% of children under five suffer from diarrheal disease due largely to lack of access to safe water.
Community Water Solutions (CWS) is a not-‐for-‐profit social enterprise that partners with rural communities in developing countries to establish sustainable water treatment businesses. These businesses are owned and operated by the communities that they serve, and use simple, affordable technologies to enable the treatment, distribution and storage of clean, safe drinking water. The maintenance and operation of these water treatment businesses is funded by revenue from the sale of drinking water, while the capital necessary to establish them is generated from CWS fundraising activities.
CWS piloted their model for drinking water treatment in June of 2008 in the village of Kasaligu in Northern Region Ghana. The following fall CWS officially established its organization as a non-‐for-‐profit corporation and was granted 501(c)(3) status in April, 2009 (meaning all donations are tax deductable!). To date, CWS has successfully implemented its water treatment businesses in five communities in Ghana, providing a reliable source of clean water to over 11,000 people!
Help Establish a Water Treatment Business Help increase that 11,000 by donating to establish another water treatment business in a village in Ghana this summer!
