I’m climbing to the top of Mt. Shasta on July 21st for personal achievement and to support foster youth that are overcoming odds everyday.
CYC is a statewide non-profit organization comprised of current and former foster youth dedicated to working with policy makers and the community to improve the foster care system. In California there are about 54,000 youth in care on any given day and approximately 4,000 emancipate from the foster care system each year. CYC began in 1988 because youth demanded their voice be heard. CYC listened has been helping to empower them ever since. For the youth involved with CYC, it is more than an advocacy organization; it is a safe place to learn, grow and be supported while on their path to adulthood.
I have been involved with CYC going on nine years. I have watched our staff tirelessly dedicate themselves to supporting our members and in turn watched our members thrive and become powerful voices in their community. Since our members are in and from the system they have been able to recognize the challenges youth face in care and when they have to leave care. They have been instrumental in creating legislation to support youth in education and also having access to higher education, advocating for services to support youth who become involved in the juvenile justice system and have created safety net programs like THP+ (transitional housing for youth after they leave care).
It’s been really amazing to witness and I am inspired year after year as I watch youth continue to create a life of their choosing despite the odds.
Doing this climb was an easy choice to make. I get to combine my love of the outdoors while supporting an organization that is near and dear to my heart. It really is a win - win.
So, PLEASE help me give back to CYC by donating to the cause …
Thanks in advance!
