THE STORY:

Anna & Ara Kulidjian wrote -

This year we met an incredible individual, Luca Belpietro, whose passion for the land and people of a remote area of Southern Kenya has inspired us to join his incredible journey of protecting this unique corner of our planet. Our dream materialized itself into the idea of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with the “dream team” of our friends and others who share the same passion for this life, to buy an ambulance for the Maasai Village at the foothills of Mt. Kili where Luca lives and works.

The Trust mission is to ensure Maasai land can be self-protected, through ecotourism and through a sustainable use of all natural resources. The eco-tourism lodge, Campi ya Kanzi , provides revenues and employment to the local Maasai. The Trust provides education, health and conservation services. It built schools, health clinics and helped Maasai organize their efforts to protect their land from poachers and unplanned agriculture which devastates the rest of Kenya and the African continent.

Kuku Group Ranch urgently needs an ambulance. This is an area of 280,000 acres of Maasai-owned land with a population of over 7,000 people. They are served by a small local clinic with a staff of a single doctor and a few nurses. I had an opportunity to work with them this summer and was amazed at how much they accomplish with the little they have. Many patients walk many miles to get to the clinic. There are no roads and local villagers have nothing but their feet for transportation. This makes them a healthy people, but the ill and young often die without the ability to get to the clinic. The ambulance would allow the doctor to get to patients in the remote areas or to transport trauma cases to the regional hospital.

Join us in our climb either in person or as a supporter to help fund this project. Our goal is to collect $50,000 before our climb next July 2011.

If you like what we are doing, please help us fundraise with whatever you can.
