I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis at age 27 in March 2010 and have been on a rather bumpy ride ever since. After months of medication trials, expensive scans, blood tests, and open chest surgery, I am a changed person healing and ready to help others like me. Now that I have a pre-existing condition, the only health care plan I can afford is one that doesn't even cover my disease. Regardless the reason, I want to use my time spent healing and on the mend in the only way I know how to...helping others. I have spent the majority of my 27 years outside playing in the woods, oceans, mountains and deserts of the U.S., more recently working to help others with illness and disability do the same through my degrees in Therapeutic Recreation and Occupational Therapy.
Having had a most fortunate life filled with education, travel, volunteerism, and love, it is time to turn my passion toward others less fortunate who experience daily the pain, sorrow, frustration and weakness of an illness such as Myasthenia Gravis.
My dream is simple: to educate others with Myasthenia Gravis and other autoimmune diseases about their rights and options in health care and how they can live the life they always wanted to with perhaps only a few changes or with the proper amount of assistance in health care and treatment/s. By raising funds for the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, I hope to spread the word about this disease and how it affects people of all ages, as well as educate those newly and currently diagnosed with MG about their options as patients and how they can reach out to others for support, both financially and emotionally.
My long-term goal is to thru hike the Colorado Trail (Denver to Durango) next summer (2011) with my father as a symbol of:
-the human's ability to persevere through illness
-to raise awareness of Myasthenia Gravis
-the need for education of all people on their health care rights and
-the need for more affordable and available health care for U.S. citizens

Please join me in spreading the word to the rest of the world about Myasthenia Gravis, and those strong individuals that live with it every day. Here's to helping others and exploring the beauty of our wilderness.
