THE STORY:

Kids should be outside!

Take a moment to recall a few of your fondest childhood memories.

I’m guessing that a few might include riding your bike around the block, playing tag in your backyard, or sledding on a snowy day. You probably got dirty, but you didn’t care.

I know I didn’t. Not when I was having so much fun, kicking up grass, getting a sunburn, and hopping into the pool with my brother and best friends. When we were outside, we could be anything we wanted and anywhere we wanted, from the roughest seas to the deepest jungle. To me, the freedom of the outdoors is an essential part of the classic childhood experience.

Living in New York City as an adult, I realize just how much I took those experiences for granted. It might be a “concrete jungle”, but I still crave time with non-concrete nature and take every opportunity I can to get out into the great outdoors. After speaking to my friends and co-workers, I think that many of you living in NYC can relate!

Given the lack of green space in many NYC communities, many kids and teens in NYC don't have the opportunities to experience the outdoors like you or I did.

Research shows being outside is good for you!

Recorded benefits include decreased stress levels, increased motivation, increased self-reliance, and improved memory, just to name a few. Schools with environmental education programs also tend to score higher on standardized tests. If you're interested in the benefits, check out this article from the National Wildlife Foundation: http://www.nwf.org/Be-Out-There/Why-Be-Out-There/Health-Benefits.aspx

The cause:

In a world where 31% of our nation’s students are dropping out, and childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years, it’s critical that we all do our part to ensure that children have easy access to outdoor activities.

The mission of the Discover Outdoors Foundation is “to positively impact learning through life-changing outdoor experiences.” The foundation partners with New York City schools to provide educational adventures to at-risk students. Since its founding in 2012, it has established partnerships with over twelve dozen NYC schools, and over 1,000 students ages 12-18 have benefited from its programs.

“Discovering the outdoors can be a life-changing experience, whether it’s in a local park or on a multi-day excursion. Our programs are designed to guide students through the discovery process, growing their confidence and skills through challenge and adventure.” – Discover Outdoors Foundation

My goal:

My goal is to raise $7,500 (i've already raised $1500 through my last campaign!)to support the Discover Outdoors Foundation and climb to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro to boost awareness of the power that outdoor education can provide to urban youth. In addition to funding my trek, the money raised will be used to provide at-risk youth with programs like:
•After school discovery
•Half-day explorations
•Day trip adventures
•Multi-day immersions
•Student leadership & certification
•Student scholarship programs

Please share this campaign with family, friends, co-workers and fellow adventurers.

Because I spent time in Jacksonville, (orange park) FL where we took climbing trees, and field baseball as a given, and then went to Atlantic City, where my classmates were unfamiliar, scared or completely fascinated and soothed by field trips to Lake Lenape, which they hadn't been exposed to until about 3rd grade... And Also-- Mt. Kilimanjaro is no small feat! 3 years ago
