Infusion #2 Update
March 31, 2016

Hi everyone! I have recovered well from my 2nd infusion and wanted to post an update!  I am overwhelmed with all of the support we have received See More

THE STORY:

DeMara is a hard-working, tough minded young woman (36) who survived Ewing's sarcoma after going through surgery, a grueling two years of chemo, and 6 weeks of radiation from ages 16-18. During that time she managed to homeschool her last two years of high school, and was determined to graduate with her class, which she proudly did. She then restarted her life by going to work as a clerk at the hospital where she spent so much time as a teen. DeMara eventually worked her way through school to first become a surgery technician, and then earning a degree as a Registered Nurse in 2014. During her years of remission, she has been blessed with 3 children (16,14,11), the same children she was told by physicians she might not be able to have. She has also been blessed with a great husband who has supported her through nursing school, as he continues to work towards his business degree. Life was good. DeMara started a new job as a surgical nurse last fall. She specializes in heart surgery because of her years of experience as a cardiac surgery tech. Her husband, an employee at a national hardware company, has worked his way up to be on the short list for a management position, moving him from hourly to a salaried position that may double his income within the next year. They bought their first fixer upper home. It’s 40 miles from their workplaces, but it’s affordable. Life was hard but good; no extra time except for work and sharing parenting duties for their children who play team sports, participate in school bands, and earn great grades with mom & dad’s help. Just before Christmas, the unthinkable happened to DeMara, Cancer returned. This time in her left breast, potentially caused by the lifetime of radiation she received on her left side which helped save her life as a teen. DeMara doesn’t qualify for FMLA as she’s been at her employer for less than a year. She’s only earned a small amount of sick time which is already gone. They just learned disability insurance will only provide a small fraction (1/6th weekly pay) which means their income is immediately dropping substantially. Their monthly house payment/utilities and food will be hard to meet and they are now facing the cost of medical expenses not covered by insurance. DeMara is self-motivated, and is willing to do her part to endure the mastectomy, chemo & even more radiation due to the cancer spreading from her breast into her lymph nodes. DeMara is also valuable – She is the nurse you want in your operation because she’s GOOD at what she does, and she truly understands the trauma of surgery and recovery from a patient’s perspective. Please help DeMara’s family keep on keeping up just enough to help them from losing their home and the basic life needs while she battles back, just as she’s always done. She’ll do her part – no matter what they throw at her. She’s even offered to knit beanie hats for others battling cancer while in treatment to pay it forward for your kindness and will share pictures of her progress. DeMara is a hard working young woman. Help her get back on her feet by giving her a chance to fight without worrying about losing all she’s struggled to earn for so many years.
