Ulithi Atoll in Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia, is a place close to our hearts at Micronesia Conservation Coalition. The people of Ulithi have a rich local culture, have been living in harmony with nature for hundreds of years and have worked hard to protect their beautiful islands, which are also home to the largest green turtle rookery in the world.
Unfortunately, the people of Ulithi have felt the brunt of climate changes that they are probably the least guilty of causing. In April 2015, Super Typhoon Maysak struck the atoll damaging or destroying pretty much every building on the islands of Falalop, Asor, MogMog, Federai, and Fais, in addition to wiping out local agriculture. Due to the remote location of the islands, international assistance was slow and the communities were still in the process of recovering when disaster struck again. Over the Christmas holiday, a waterspout turned tornado wrecked havoc on the island of Falalop, ripping apart homes that were just rebuilt following Maysak and uprooting newly planted crops which the islanders were counting on for sustenance. The tornado waterspout destroyed over twenty homes and cook houses in its path, adding to the devastation caused by Typhoon Maysak in 2015.
MCC hopes to raise US $ 20,000 to help the island of Falalop recover from these compounded disasters. As this is not a marine conservation effort, MCC will not take any administrative percentage from the fundraising. 100% of proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly towards purchasing building materials, like roof sheeting, nails, hurricane strapping, and concrete to repair foundations, as well as agricultural products and tools requested by the community, and shipping to get them from the mainland to families in need.
