THE STORY:

On August 13th the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area received almost 21 inches of rain combined with rain from previous days and rain in following days to create the worst flooding event that Baton Rouge and surrounding areas have ever seen. According to the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce, East Baton Rouge Parish alone had 161,000 (68,000 homes) residents impacted by flooding representing 35% of the housing in the Parish. Forty-one percent of homes within the nine Parishes in the flood area were impacted by the flood waters; that is more than 145,000 homes. Analysis shows that a relatively small percentage of homeowners in the region were covered by flood insurance , as most of the area is not considered to be in a flood plain. The unprecedented reach of water in some areas has been described as a 1,000 year flood. Personal Impact When these events happen it is often hard to put an emotion to something so far away. However, one of our own Johnny Laurent, our VP of People, AZ, grew up in this area and had family directly impacted by the flood. The home where his wife and siblings were raised and where her mother still lives took on approximately 20 inches of water. His mother-in-law and stepfather-in-law were evacuated at 3 AM on Sunday August 14th from the rising water. She is a retired teacher and spent most of her life helping others. They do not have flood insurance and are trying to figure out how they will be able to recover. Johnny, his wife (Lise), and daughter (Whitney) went home last week to help prepare for recovery. They spent four days removing 46 years of memories and items and putting them in a trash pile on the street. The house has been gutted and is drying out. Now the emotional healing and rebuilding must begin. Without insurance to help, the rebuilding of the home is solely on their shoulders with limited resources, as both she and her husband are retired and living on a fixed income. Johnny has been working tirelessly to tap into every resource possible to find individuals willing to donate time and materials towards rebuilding the home, but with so many in need in the area he has not had much success. Our goal is to raise $22,000 as soon as possible to lessen the financial burden and enable them to start rebuilding. The Boy and the Starfish A man was walking along a deserted beach at sunset. As he walked he could see a young boy in the distance, as he drew nearer he noticed that the boy kept bending down, picking something up and throwing it into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things into the ocean. As the man approached even closer, he was able to see that the boy was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at a time he was throwing them back into the water. The man asked the boy what he was doing, the boy replied,"I am throwing these washed up starfish back into the ocean, or else they will die through lack of oxygen. "But", said the man, "You can't possibly save them all, there are thousands on this beach, and this must be happening on hundreds of beaches along the coast. You can't possibly make a difference." The boy looked down, frowning for a moment; then bent down to pick up another starfish, smiling as he threw it back into the sea. He replied, "I made a huge difference to that one!" ~Author Unknown~
