I have been Board Chair of Close to Home for 6 years and am asking all my family, friends and business contacts to help me raise enough money for the Summer Youth Team Program! Close to Home’s Youth Team is a network of youth, ages 13-20, who are trained community organizers working to prevent and respond to teen dating and domestic and sexual violence.
Dating and domestic and sexual violence are widespread public health issues that deeply impact families, communities and youth. Dating and domestic and sexual violence are a major issue on school campuses as well, including the Boston Public Schools (BPS). According to a Close to Home (C2H) Youth Team study conducted in 2008-09, 71% of youth surveyed have witnessed dating violence on their BPS campus. The good news is that 63% of youth surveyed indicated an interest in learning more about this issue and in getting involved as part of the solution. Close to Home's Youth Team gives youth the chance to make a difference on this issue for themselves and their peers.
Begun in 2004, the Youth Team has been comprised of youth leaders (approximately 50% male, 50% female, and 33% African American, 33% Asian, 33% Latino), 10 - 15 of whom work 10 hours/week during the school year and 20-25 of whom work 25 hours/week during the summer.
My fundraising goal is provide the $1500 summer stipends for each of our Youth Team members - up to a team of 25 in 2011.
But contributions of any size can have an impact this summer:
$200 supports a Youth Team member for a week
$100 provides a 2 hour leadership session for a Youth Team Member
$50 provides enough art supplies for a public art display
Summmer Session starts July 5th. We have less than 3 months - Let's get to work!
