Innovative Education

Providing a Christian liberal arts education that fosters the development of great minds and wide interests while nurturing each child’s relationship to God and the world He created.

Charlotte Mason Community School (CMCS) in Detroit was established (as Ambleside Community School) in 2002 by a group who saw a need and an opportunity to provide a quality, Christ-centered education in Detroit. They established the school in direct response to a need expressed by local families for a quality educational experience for their children. The founders were also deeply compelled by the philosophy of education promoted by 19th century British educator, Charlotte Mason. Since then the school has grown and seen graduates go on to do well in high school and college.

School Structure

CMCS is a K-8 school. Classroom size is capped at 12 students. All teachers and board members adhere to a historic Christian statement of faith. The school is open to all students regardless of faith. The educational model is hands-on: students are taught academics in a classroom setting in addition to being encouraged to explore nature, art, and music. Students are treated with respect as individuals created in the image of God.

Charlotte Mason Focused Education

Charlotte Mason believed that education is a science of relationships: relationships to God, to man (including ourselves) and to the world. It has been demonstrated through other research that the characteristics of learning readiness are developed rather than taught, and only through numerous concrete interactions with the world can young children prepare to benefit from formal instruction later (Elkind 1987). Consistent with this belief, the curriculum offered at CMCS encourages children to develop relationships with the world around them through numerous hands-on experiences. Ms. Mason’s methods call for using great literature as a means of putting children in touch with great minds, and fine and performing arts to cultivate creativity and an appreciation for the diversity of artistic contribution in the world. Outdoor play and nature study are part of the curriculum, both of whichhave been proven to enhance educational success.

Ms. Mason’s philosophy is that all education is self-education; that children must be active learners. She believed that children are not vessels that teachers are to fill with knowledge, but rather per- sons with the capabilities necessary to acquire all appropriate knowledge for themselves by feasting on ideas. It is the teacher’s job to set before them a wide and rich curriculum, to provide informing ideas, and to help them develop the mental, moral and physical habits necessary to work with that knowledge.

What we provide:

Dedicated Teachers

The CMCS teachers have been working with limited compensation, motivated by the life-change they see in children. They treat children with respect, encouraging them to share ideas and explore their passions.

Child Centered Education

Children are people who don’t need to be filled with facts, but inspired to love learning. Students are transformed whey they come to CMCS and are given the opportunity to explore what they love in a safe and challenging environment.

Quality Education in Detroit

With schools closing at an alarming pace in Detroit, without funding for enough supplies and staff, children become the victims, and their education and ultimately their futures suffer. CMCS is committed to having no more than 12 students in each class, and making sure that each child is treated with respect and encouraged to love learning.

Charlotte Mason’s Philosophy

“Education is life. That life is sustained on ideas. Ideas are of spiritual origin, and God has made us so that we get them chiefly as we convey them to one another, whether by word of mouth, written page, Scripture word, musical symphony; but we must sustain a child’s inner life with ideas as we sustain his body with food.”

“The question is not,--how much does the youth know? When he has finished his education—but how much does he care? And about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? And therefore, how full is the life he has before him?”
