BENEFITING: NATIONAL CMV FOUNDATION INC
Very few people have ever heard the term cytomegalovirus, but CMV is the most common viral infection infants are born with in the United States. More than 30,000 children are infected by CMV each year and more babies will have disabilities due to congenital CMV than Zika, Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Fifth Disease, Spina Bifida, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and Toxoplasmosis. The good news is that, thanks in large part to the National CMV Foundation, the conversation around CMV is mounting, with recent coverage in the NY Times, Science Journal, PBS, NPR, and CBS, and with 9 states enacting legislation to require CMV screening tests for babies and/or CMV prevention education for mothers. This is amazing progress! But it's just the beginning.
