THE STORY:

I am thrilled to be a member of the Casa Myrna marathon team. It has been one of my long time goals to run the Boston Marathon and I couldn't feel more blessed than I do today running for my favorite charity.

I had the good fortune of working with the Casa Myrna team during the summer for a few different events. Our biggest event was a Golf Tournement where we raised over $5,000.

My ambition origanily in partnering with Casa Myrna is to create an understanding and awareness around the issue of dating and domestic violence. Far too often this goes unnoticed because it is an issue that is rarely talked about making it difficult to create a culture of mindfulness.

Although I did not live with my partner at the time, I was a victim of physical and mental abuse. I was ashamed and embarrassed. I felt it was my fault and that I somehow deserved it. I never talked about it and most times I pretended it didn’t happen. I justified it in everyway I could; “it has only happened a handful of times,” “I shouldn’t have said something that upset him,” and “I don’t want my friends to dislike him.” These mindsets lead me to a place of isolation and depression. By the grace of god, my grandmother, also a victim of physical abuse knew the signs and helped me recognize that I had choices.

I consider myself blessed because I was young and still in college. I was able to rely on my family and friends to move on and start over. I recognize that isn’t the case for most women of domestic violence. In many of these cases: there is a fear for life, children and financial stability.

For these reasons, I am taking on this incredible challege to raise $7,500 and to run in one of the most prestegious marathons. Thank you for your support!

Casa Myrna delivers solutions to end domestic and dating violence through intervention, awareness and prevention. Founded in 1977 by community activists, Casa Myrna offers:

•Three Boston-based shelters for survivors who are homeless due to domestic and dating violence.

•A comprehensive range of bilingual English/Spanish supportive services to provide survivors with tools to recover from the trauma of abuse and begin to build sustainable self-sufficiency. Our services include; housing assistance; financial literacy education and job readiness skill building; individual and group counseling; legal advocacy and representation; and community-based advocacy.

•SafeLink Hotline (877-785-2020), the only statewide, 24/7, multilingual domestic violence hotline in Massachusetts.

•Education, outreach and public awareness, including annual campaigns on mass transit systems statewide about domestic and dating violence.

• Domestic and dating violence prevention trainings and education to teens and adults across the state.

Our work helps build better futures for survivors struggling with many forms of adversity, including poverty, violence and homelessness.

A donation to Team Casa Myrna for the Boston Marathon supports this important work. Your support has an impact:

•$75 – you buy three nights of healthy foods for a family of three coming into one of our shelters

•$100 – you purchase new sheets, pillows and towels for a family in one of our shelters

•$150 – you provide ten new children’s and adult books for the library in the Teen Parenting Program

•$200 – you help defray the moving costs for a survivor who is transitioning into a safe, permanent, affordable home

•$250 – you ensure a survivor is not alone in court at a restraining order hearing

•$500 – you support two workshops for high school students on dating violence and healthy relationships

•$1,000 – you keep the SafeLink hotline open for 12 hours

•$2,500 – you sponsor a five-week personal economic planning workshop for 10 survivors

Thank you very much for your support of Team Casa Myrna!
