EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
I am thrilled to be a member of the Casa Myrna marathon team. It has been one of my long time goals to run the Boston Marathon and I couldn't feel more blessed than I do today running for my favorite charity.
I had the good fortune of working with the Casa Myrna team during the summer for a few different events. Our biggest event was a Golf Tournement where we raised over $5,000.
My ambition origanily in partnering with Casa Myrna is to create an understanding and awareness around the issue of dating and domestic violence. Far too often this goes unnoticed because it is an issue that is rarely talked about making it difficult to create a culture of mindfulness.
Although I did not live with my partner at the time, I was a victim of physical and mental abuse. I was ashamed and embarrassed. I felt it was my fault and that I somehow deserved it. I never talked about it and most times I pretended it didn’t happen. I justified it in everyway I could; “it has only happened a handful of times,” “I shouldn’t have said something that upset him,” and “I don’t want my friends to dislike him.” These mindsets lead me to a place of isolation and depression. By the grace of god, my grandmother, also a victim of physical abuse knew the signs and helped me recognize that I had choices.
I consider myself blessed because I was young and still in college. I was able to rely on my family and friends to move on and start over. I recognize that isn’t the case for most women of domestic violence. In many of these cases: there is a fear for life, children and financial stability.
For these reasons, I am taking on this incredible challege to raise $7,500 and to run in one of the most prestegious marathons. Thank you for your support!
