My Oct. 13th visit to Sapelo Island reminded me anew of its unique beauty and our task to preserve it. Thanks CSC for protecting our coast!  See more

THE STORY:

Watch out for the Sentinels!  Not those snakelike machines from The Matrix, these Sentinels are the good people who visit the barrier islands of Georgia and volunteer to be the eyes and ears of the Center for a Sustainable Coast -- so it can do its best to protect our precious coastal resources for future generations (of people, not Terminators or iPhones...geesh you're a geek).

Now, here's the sensible backstory that ...CENTER FOR A SUSTAINABLE COAST INC wrote --

A team of volunteers will serve as our "eyes and ears" focused on the major barrier islands along Georgia's Atlantic coast. They will report observations and suggestions about threats, opportunities, conditions, and trends to assist in improving the conservation of these vulnerable, ecologically diverse, and unique islands to help keep them healthy and beautiful. These islands include the last vestiges of natural coastal areas in the U.S. Southeast.

We need funds to launch and operate the program for the first year. These efforts will include implementing methods for communicating among the Sentinels and the Center, monitoring and tracking environmental conditions, and reaching effective, timely decisions that respond to well-documented concerns raised by the Sentinels.

Resources at risk include millions of acres of productive tidal marsh, threatened and endangered species such as the painted bunting, piping plover, wood stork, and a variety of sea turtles that nest on island beaches. Surrounding waters, designated as "essential fish habitat" by the National Marine Fisheries Service, are exposed to harmful pollution, made worse by recurring drought and fragmented, unaccountable development policies.
