Coco's Camino Walk for Child Refugees
Organized by: Colette Poritzky
December 05, 2016
Hi, My name is Colette Poritzky but my friends and family call me Coco. I am 13 years old and I live in Northern California. For a few years now I have wanted to walk the Camino de Santiago from France to Spain. Originally I wanted to do this with my mom as a personal challenge to walk the 500 kilometers but also because I was interested in experiencing the history and culture of Europe.
Recently I learned about all the refugees who are fleeing from violence in places like Syria, Iran and north Africa. I also learned that there are around 10 million kids like me, who are now without the basic things that I take for granted every day like food and shelter and health care. Many have been separated from their families and friends. And I want to do something to help. But I'm a 13 year old kid so what can I do on my own?
So, I thought that I could use this walk as not just a personal challenge but also a way to raise money and awareness for child refugees. My goal is to raise $100,000 and at the end of my journey on the Camino, every dollar that I raise will be donated to charitable organizations that do the work to help child refugees like Savethechildren.org, Unicef, UNHCR and Operationrefugeechild.org . To do this, I will need help from businesses, charitable groups, individuals, and families. I am looking for businesses to help with transportation, equipment for my journey like good trekking shoes and rain gear, a GoPro and camera so I can document the journey. But most of all I need your help with a donation and getting the word out.
Here's the plan: In the next 6 months I will be reaching out to news organizations, bloggers, businesses, friends and family to get everyone I know to tell everyone they know. I will be getting my school involved and will send out emails to companies that make charitable donations, celebrities (like Ellen Degeneres), and the charitable organizations that we will be supporting. My mom and I plan to begin the 500km walk mid April 2017 and expect to complete the journey by the end of May. Please help me make a difference.
