Code for a Cause
Organized by: Shaina Zafar
Hi everyone! My name is Shaina Zafar and I'm a current senior at H. Frank Carey High School. I come from a small town in Long Island, Franklin Square. Throughout my life I've come to find my passion for innovation and helping those around me. I recently started a "Code for a Cause" program that will be in partnership with the Girls Scouts of Nassau County and Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation Program. The program combines my two favorite things, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and international relations. I found my love for them through Model UN and have been working on changing my local community ever since. The program takes elementary school girls from different parts of Long Island and immerses them in the power of coding through simple bloc programming programs like Google's Made With a Code and MIT Scratch
The harsh reality is that women compose half the American workforce, but represent less than a quarter of STEM jobs. That's why it's crucial to start at a young age. "Code for a Cause" will be in full effective over the summer of 2016 onwards into September. Girls will research global issues like poverty, hunger, and education and brainstorm feasible solutions. They will have the opportunity to fundraise and gather supplies for underprivileged girls across the globe. Through this project,l I've been accepted into the StartingBloc Fellowship Program, which provides resources for young entrepreneurs! Code for a Cause can be a platform for other girls to do the same Funding for the program will be used to buy microcontroller kits, supplies, and other resources to the girls to create their own project! Thank you for you support!
