THE STORY:

CODMAN ACADEMY FOUNDATION wrote -

The funds will be applied toward Codman’s Wellness program, which encompasses our physical fitness program as well as our nutrition and health program.  Mbakwe Okafor, Wellness Director, was named as one of Boston Globe’s “Globe 100: Most Innovative People in Massachusetts 2012” for his efforts around nutrition and wellness at Codman.  In 2010, Codman was recognized as the first and highest scoring school in the state to win the Gold-Level Massachusetts School Wellness Award, given by the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the MA Department of Public Health.  We have been able to accomplish this without an on-site gym or athletic fields.  In addition to providing sports teams such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, baseball, and softball, we also offer activities such as swim lessons, cardio and strength classes, and personal training programs through our partnership with the Dorchester YMCA.  Beginning last fall, all Codman students now receive a membership to the YMCA (compliments of Codman), and all students take swim lessons and are required to pass a mandatory swimming test as a graduation requirement.

We also have a student-run Nutrition Action Club, which works to educate the student body on nutrition and health initiatives.  In 2011, we launched our first Junk Food Free school year, banning all junk food on campus.  Last year, we will be expanding this program to include the Codman Square Health Center, and our students served as leaders to help the health center ban junk food among its staff.  This year, we are expanding our school to add lower grades (K-8), beginning with our first K1 and K2 classes this fall.  Our NAC members will serve as mentors and role models to our younger students as they introduce them to our Junk Food Free policy and the benefits of healthy eating.
