100% of funds raised will support Codman Academy's Wellness program. Codman Academy is an urban charter public school located in Dorchester, MA. One of Codman’s core beliefs is in the importance of educating and nurturing the whole student, both inside and outside of the classroom. Our unique location inside the Codman Square Health Center has helped us to establish a healthy environment on our campus.
Even though we lack an on-site gym, we believe strongly in the importance of physical education. 100% of our high school students are required to complete four years of physical education, and all students receive memberships to the Dorchester YMCA (which they are able to also use on evenings and weekends). At the YMCA, students can participate swim lessons, cardio and strength classes, and personal training programs. Our varsity sports include soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, baseball, and softball.
Furthermore, all 9th grade students participate in a nutrition course. This hands-on course, originally designed by Harvard School of Public Health faculty, connects healthy eating with the prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Students must pass a nutrition competency exam as a graduatiion requirement.
At Codman Academy, we provide every student with a free healthy breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. Furthermore, we have a junk-food free campus and a student-led Nutrition Action Club.
In 2010, Codman was recognized as the first and highest scoring school in the state to win the Gold-Level Massachusetts School Wellness Award, given by the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the MA Department of Public Health. The pioneer of our Wellness program and founding Wellness Director, Mbakwe Okafor, was recognized as one of The Boston Globe’s “Globe 100: Most Innovative People in Massachusetts 2012."
