BENEFITING: YALLA San Diego Inc
EVENT DATE: Sep 03, 2016
The Council for Opportunity in Education sponsors a community service project each year with a local community agency in the host city of the annual conference. This year, the Council is proud to assist the Youth and Leaders Living Actively (YALLA) community program in San Diego. YALLA uses soccer and academic programs to motivate refugee and immigrant youth to rebuild their lives. YALLA was started in 2009 by Mark Kabban. Kabban, though not a refugee himself, fled war torn Beirut during Lebanon’s 15 year civil war, during which many of his family members were killed. Kabban moved to San Diego when he was 9 and experienced the difficulties of relocating to a new city, and country, while not speaking the language and feeling lost and displaced.
YALLA now oversees 4 primary programs, K-8 scholar academy, New Beginnings, College Bound and Competitive Soccer Club. Each targets a different subsect of the refugee community, but all are intended to assist participants complete K-12 education and move on to the university environment.
In place of the traditional backpack and school supplies that has been requested in the past, COE asks that you use the resources you would have used to purchase these items, to donate directly to YALLA. Donations can be as little as $5 and all will be used to directly impact the lives of refugee youth in the San Diego area. We hope you’ll join COE in supporting team YALLA - together we can create a bright future for refugee and immigrant youth. Thank you for your attention!
