BENEFITING: BUILD, Inc.
EVENT DATE: May 28, 2015
My dad always stressed to me the importance of giving back. "Give and you shall receive" he taught me. Thus, for years my father served on the board of directors of BUILD Chicago (buildchicago.org), an organization that works to engage at-risk inner city youth through after-school programming and gang rehabilitation in the hopes of keeping them on a path to higher education. My dad passed away suddenly in 2011 from a lethal arrhythmia, and my world was shattered. Still despite how tragic and devastating it was to our family, it has made me into a stronger man.
ENTER, H.O.W. -
7 years ago I started a DIY showcase I dubbed, "House of Wax". It is basically an art collective show and safe space for individuals to freely express their art and creativity. After my father died, I decided it was finally time for me to step up and continue his mission. April 16th, I launched Dog Park Productions (@dogparkchi), a non-for-profit production company that puts on monthly art collective showcases at venues around Chicago. 100% of our profits go to BUILD Chicago to help stop the gang violence plaguing our city's youth.
The first art collective showcase will be May 28th at GMan Tavern on Clark/Racine. There will be free parking, free food, and some of the best talent Chicago has to offer.
Although still hot-off-the-press, Dog Park Productions strives to present innovative and entertaining art showcases which engage audiences from all segments of the Chicago creative community. By fostering a safe space for artistic growth and diversity through the promotion of upcoming and established Chicago artists alike, we hope to make a tangible imprint on our society by breaking down artistic boundaries and desegregating Chicago’s creative communities once and for all.
If you're still with me, I thank you for reading. I want to leave you with a quote that has always resonated with me, to think about as you go about your day:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
Be the change you wish to see.
Stay tuned @dogparkchi on the twitter.
