I am very passionate about two things - running and bleeding disorders. I now have the amazing opportunity to embrace both of those! On March 18, I will be running the NYC Half Marathon. While the benefits of training and running a half marathon are enough in itself, I wanted to pair it with my passion for the bleeding disorders community.
Over the course of the last 8 years, our lives have been blessed with many people in the bleeding disorders community and we've seen first hand the amazing work done by various organizations. One such organization is the Colburn-Keenan Foundation. Colburn - Keenan Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the health and well being of individuals and families living with chronic illnesses, with priority placed on those living with bleeding disorders. In 2011 alone, the Colburn-Keenan Foundation granted over $157,000 to individuals and families with bleeding disorders and other chronic illnesses who were facing financial hardship. Also in 2011, they gave $48,000 in scholarship funds to students with bleeding disorders and $10,000 to organizations that serve people with bleeding disorders. Since their inception in 2006, through all of their charitable programs, they have given over $800,000 to benefit people with bleeding disorders and other chronic illnesses.
On a more personal note, we are very blessed that the Executive Director of Colburn-Keenan, Sasha Zatyrka and her husband Mark, are personal friends. Mark is one of Nick's blood brothers and a mentor to both Nick and us. Mark is Nick's "go to guy" when he has questions that only a blood brother can answer. And he's our first resource when we have a parenting question. To make it even closer to our heart, the Colburn-Keenan Foundation was started by Mark's uncle, who also had hemophilia.
I am so honored to be running the NYC Half Marathon while raising money for a charity very dear to my heart - Colburn - Keenan Foundation. Thank you in advance for your support of me and Colburn - Keenan!
