The girls from both McAuley and Colerain will be sporting some blue for colon cancer. Colerain’s Head Coach, Gus Schroeder, lost his sister-in-law, Michele Risola, this past summer to colon cancer. Michele played and coached soccer for many years of her life. Michele was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer in March 2015 at the age of 43. Within days of receiving her diagnosis, she underwent several tests and started her chemo regimen. For the next 15 months, Michele received a chemo treatment every two weeks. She stayed in very positive spirits and fought hard throughout her entire journey because
“NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE!”
Those were words that both Michele and her biggest supporters lived by. On June 9, 2016, Michele’s journey ended at the age of 44. She left behind her husband and two sons.
Colon cancer has a high diagnosis rate for women. This is not well known as there is a lack of awareness about colon cancer for women. Make sure to get screened early if you can. Michele would feel honored knowing that she was helping others because she was a very selfless person.
