Visiting colleges and universities during high school can be one of the most influential experiences for a young student. Unfortunately, not all high school students are able to afford a trip to visit schools. Many do not know what to expect until they get to their first day of orientation, which can lead to low college retention rates. By visiting the school beforehand, students are able to get a sense of whether the school will be a good fit for them. This year, we are determined to make that happen for a group of 17 Grulla High School (GHS) students.
Grulla High School is located in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas and is just a few miles away from the Mexican border. The high school's College Club first set out on making college a possibility last year when it was created by a sophomore student named Jaqueline Garcia. Seeing that many of her peers were faced with incredible challenges throughout their education, that many were going to be first generation college students, and that many did not have support from home, Jaqueline was determined to make a change within her community and school. By forming the Grulla High School College Club, students now had a place to go to help them pursue their dreams of a higher education.
Last year, the College Club raised $25,000 to take 18 Grulla High School students to Austin, TX and Boston, MA where they spent a week visiting the University of Texas at Austin, Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Northeastern, Brandeis, and Brown. The trip was a major success and it helped to spark a flame of enthusiasm within our students. There was a renewed excitement and a ton of new inquiries concerning their plans for their future. After this wonderful experience, we decided to make these trips happen every school year to continue to expose our students to the endless possibilities available to them.
On May 18, 2015, 17 GHS students, accompanied by 3 teachers, will travel 1,900 miles from Rio Grande City, TX to Philadelphia, PA where they will tour the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel, Swarthmore, Villanova, Temple, and Princeton University. Through college visit trips like these, we hope to continue to inspire our students to achieve and increase the number of college going high school students from Grulla High School.
