The Story: With all I have been through with this awful disease, my family and I have started The Zippy Fund to help pediatric cancer patients and their families. Our main goal is to provide for the Valerie Fund and their patients. The Valerie Fund is a non-for-profit organization established in 1976 in memory of nine-year-old Valerie Goldstein by her parents, Ed and Sue. The Valerie Fund's mission is to provide support for the comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders. I have seen first-hand what they do for patients and their families with my two battles. The disease is mentally, physically and emotionally draining as well as extremely costly. The cost of cancer goes far beyond hospital visits and chemotherapy treatments. There are meals in the hospitals, co-pays, prescriptions, etc. We want to alleviate financial hardships for families so they can deal with what really matters, the patient. Our fund will be dedicated to un-burdening the financial issues a family of The Valerie Fund may face, so they can concentrate on banding together and defeating this wretched disease. The Valerie Fund has social workers, educational liaisons, nutritionists, psychologists and many more staff members besides doctors and nurses who do well beyond their jobs. All of their employees are extremely dedicated to the cause of helping and saving the lives of these courageous kids. My family and I have a job to do, which is give back to those fighting the same battles we did. -Zippy Cimino
