THE STORY:

The Harbor School’s mission is to use New York’s maritime experience to create a rigorous, college preparatory
curriculum that instills in its students the ethic and skills of stewardship. Harbor School seeks to do this by providing a
challenging and compelling high school experience that engages New York City youth through the study of the maritime culture,
history, and environment of New York City and its surrounding waters. The majority of Harbor School students live below the federal
poverty level and will be the first in their family to attend college. As a New York City public school that has been in Bushwick,
Brooklyn for seven years, its population has reflected the neighborhood and borough. Many of its students come from single-parent
homes, speak limited English, and are extremely susceptible to the consequences of urban poverty.

These factors limit the amount of exposure many of our students have to necessary college information and leave students
with limited knowledge of their college options. The majority of our student’s families are unable to bring their student to visit
colleges outside of New York City and students are forced to rely on second-hand accounts of a school’s environment. Without the
opportunity to visit a college, the student often makes the decision to attend a school with limited understanding of what to expect
from life on campus. The student arrives at school under prepared, making the transition process even more difficult for a population
that is confronted by many obstacles in the college matriculation process. In addition, students who do not visit colleges are at a
disadvantage in the admissions process. Applicants are often assessed based on both their demonstrated interest in the college and
their admissions interview. These students are compared to students who have had the opportunity to visit several colleges and
organize interviews at each school.

The College Office needs your money to allow access to colleges on an individual level, ensuring that
students are exposed to colleges that are in line with their interests and abilities. College selection is an incredibly high-stakes
decision and arming Harbor School students with first-hand exposure to colleges and universities will allow them to make an
informed decision that will impact them for the rest of their lives. With more information, students will choose schools where they
have the best chance for success and lead to improved matriculation and college graduation rates. Students will gain confidence in
the application process, consider schools they may otherwise have had no exposure to and increase their admissibility to
competitive colleges and universities. Your donation to the college office will provide a unique opportunity for students to have in depth exposure to colleges
and universities that meet their individual academic, extracurricular and social interests.
