BENEFITING: DEVELOPING MINDS FOUNDATION CORPORATION
The foundation builds schools and supports education and rehabilitation programs for children in areas affected by violence and poverty.
<=== Please watch this eye-opening video of an escaped child soldier who came to us for help.
Once I met these kids, they were forever in my heart. What can compare to the smiles of children, who once suffered at the hands of the guerrilla, and are now on the path to leading happy, constructive lives? PLEASE HELP US HELP THEM.
My Project: HOUSE, EDUCATE, & RE-INTEGRATE EX-CHILD SOLDIERS IN COLOMBIA
For nearly a decade, our program has accepted former child soldiers who escape from the illegally armed guerilla groups into which they have been taken, primarily the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN). Since that time, we have successfully reintegrated hundreds of former child soldiers who have demobilized from these illegally armed groups. We have deep expertise in helping these former combatants transition into civilian life and assume constructive, peaceful, and productive roles.
These children are mostly from small villages in the mountains and jungles, and have typically been indoctrinated in the ways of irregular warfare at a very tender age. Most were recruited around 12 or 13 years of age, although some entered earlier. These kids have been part of the armed conflict, on average, for 3 years, during which time they typically receive no education.
WHAT WE HAVE BUILT
For nearly 10 years, we have sponsored a rehabilitation and reeducation program to house former child soldiers participating in Colombia’s conflict. At this facility, the children receive psychological counseling; basic education (accelerated, in some instances); vocational and technical training in various disciplines such as mechanics, hairstyling, and woodworking; recreational activities to improve socialization skills, and organized family reintegration, where possible.
YOUR DONATION WILL DIRECTLY FUND:
- An additional part-time Psychologist for the year
- Part-time staff focused entirely on job opportunities: persuading employers to look beyond our kids' backgrounds and see what type of good citizens and ambitious hard workers they are today
- Family reunification calls
- Computer/Printer equipment
- Travel costs
...thereby enabling a greater number of children to be accepted into the project, while increasing the odds that each child receives the requisite psychological, emotional, and educational support to lead a productive and peaceful life, and an opportunity when he or she leaves us.

DEVELOPING MINDS FOUNDATION - Since 2006, we have dedicated our efforts to initiatives such as rehabilitating former child soldiers of the guerrilla in Colombia, building and supporting technology schools in Rio de Janeiro’s violent favelas, and introducing literacy projects in inner cities of the United States. In these troubled communities, we offer traditional education and vocational skills, as well as psychological and social support, to address the core needs of our students.
