STAFF SERGEANT JOSHUA HAGER - KIA 02-22-2007
The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Heather Hager, wife of Joshua Hager. Heather wrote this letter to Josh's Battalion five months after Josh was killed. Josh served with the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division out of Ft. Carson, Colorado. Josh is survived by his wife and son, Bayley, now 17.
"Josh came home from Iraq February 22, 2007. He came home not as I had hoped and prayed for, but he did come home. He died protecting the boys he loved so much. He loved them like a father would his sons. He shared with me something the night he deployed to Iraq. He told me, "Momma, my job is to bring all my men home alive." Well baby, you're almost there. The boys keep his spirit alive with their dedication to the cause he died for. I am so very proud of each and every one of them - he was too. We all lost so much that cold February night. We will never be the same. But he would be proud of us. We stuck together; we Rangered through and we came out the other side better for having such a man in our lives. It was an honor to share him with the boys of Ghost Platoon; he wouldn't have had it any other way.
Where do you go when a piece of your heart is gone forever....The message I get from his men was how he could make the best of a bad situation. He is now teaching me how to do the same. He hit the floor every morning full force, ready to seize the day. He would have seized the day no matter what the forecast. What would Josh do? Raise our son. We have a beautiful son, who is a carbon copy of his father. Our son has that spark, that drive, that love of life his father cherished so much. Thank you Josh for such a wonderful gift.
