The idea behind the Come Grow with Me Youth Garden is actually 3-fold. One is necessity. When I say necessity, I mean the need to be around adults that are teaching these children a useful and unique skill. Two, these children often don’t receive the fresh veggies that we sometimes take for granted, I wont even go into the vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. Three, a lot of these children that are just ”hanging out' in the neighborhood aren't in any organized sport or organized program. These children don't often see an adult figure as someone they can talk TO, they are usually the ones who are being talked AT from adults. These children generally don't have a lot of adults that stick around for the entire length of a week, a month, or even a summer. I want to change that. I am one person, but have an army of GREAT people that would like to make a difference, often times just don't know what to do.

The basic premise of the garden is this:

The children help clean and prepare the lot for planting.
The children help plant all plants and veggies.
The children will help keep the lot clean, plants watered, weeds kept at bay, etc.
The children will split all veggies on a pre-determined basis throughout the season.
The children will take part in selling their veggies and in particular by going to neighborhoods they normally wouldn’t go to

My goal is for year one and two:

Be able to build, plant, and maintain 6-8 raised beds
Have 20 children minimum to participate
Have enough volunteers that each child can have at least one constant person as a “Garden Buddy”
Raise enough money to build garden, feed children on days they come, assure safe transport for the participants
Have parents involved at least part-time
Have a successful harvest throughout the growing season to support the planting efforts of year 2
