BENEFITING: Common Threads
ORGANIZER: Common Threads
EVENT DATE: Oct 12, 2014
For years, I have been a marathon runner and running coach. I am also a food writer and recognize the importance of both eating well and keeping fit to maintain a healthy balance.
I am running the Chicago Marathon and raising money for Common Threads. Many of my friends and associates in the culinary field are well aware of their mission to educate children on the importance of nutrition and physical well being and to foster an appreciation of cultural diversity through the power of cooking. Running programs in 6 major cities in the US and growing, Common Threads is making a major impact on childhood obesity.
By the way, I was an obese child, fed the wrong foods by seemingly well-meaning parents who gave me entire pizzas and frozen dinners to eat. I had my first healthy snack, a carrot, in school. My mother was dumbfounded that someone would actually eat an uncooked, raw, hard vegetable without boiling it into submission and putting butter and salt on it. Sometimes children must learn outside of the home. Common Threads helps.
I have to raise $1,000 in two weeks. Please give generously.
