BENEFITING: Community Change, Inc.
Educating and Organizing for Racial Equity Since 1968
Community Change was born out of the Civil Rights Movement and in response to the Kerner Commission which named racism as "a white problem." CCI has done what few organizations are willing to do: shine a spotlight on the roots of racism in white culture with the intention of dealing with racism at its source, as well as with its impact on communities of color.
PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
The Internet is critical for disseminating information, but it does not discriminate against information it carries. Hate speech and racist representations proliferate in social media, online news comment sections and community forums. We often fial to recognize the Internet is a socially constructed environment, one that mirrors and exacerbates the structural racism that exists in our physical spaces.
What can information workers do to counteract those messages? How can critical race consciousness enhance on- and off-line library services? This project attempts to explore how information in the age of rapid technology innovation contributes to structural racism and what librarians and other information professionals can do about it.
