Organized by: June Yazel
EVENT DATE May 20, 2014
5 teams of students (22 kids) have won the honor to participate in Destination Imagination Global Finals and need funding to get there...Please help!
Destination Imagination (DI) is a international non-profit, volunteer-led, cause-organization whose purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Annually, students compete in one of seven standards-based Challenges including STEM, Improv, Visual Arts, Service Learning, and Early Learning. Each Challenge enables student teams to learn and experience the creative process while working in groups and using critical and creative thinking skills to solve a problem. for more information about this program go to http://www.destinationimagination.org/who-we-are
Community DIPS, a community sponsored organization which started with 13 teams at the Northern Indiana Destination Imagination Regional Competition. Eight of those teams continued on to the state competition, and a whopping 5 are moving on to the global competition at the end of May!
Our elementary level team is going on in the Technical Challenge, where they had to build a device that detected devices that could not be seen. As with each challenge, there has to be an accompanying skit. This team put on a rodeo which was very clever
One middle level team and a high school level team are participating in the Community Outreach Challenge. The middle level team project centers around restoring grave stones in our local cemetery which date back to just before the civil war. The high school level team is working to increase community awareness and participation at a local wildlife park. Both of these teams present a skit at Globals that incorporates the project goals and outcomes.
A second middle level team and a university level team are moving on in the IMPROV Challenge. They had to research characters and their jobs from 8 different time periods and research various make-up styles. At the competition, they "drew" a character from a time period and a make-up style. With those 2 pieces of information, they had 4 minutes to create a skit One minute before their performance time, they were given a random problem that had to be incorporated into their skit where the contemporary character and the character from the past had to come together to solve the problem. They had to create a 5 minute skit it using this information.
It is important realize that each one of these student teams, while supervised by an adult team manager, has to complete these projects without any outside input. They must do all the research, organization, critical thinking, problem solving, set design and creation ALL ON THEIR OWN!
Usually, these DI (Destination Imagination) teams are based/supported by the local school system, but this is not the case with our teams. Community DIPS is a community based organization, sponsored by parents and local donations. While we have been fundraising all year, (bracelet sales, donut sales, Christmas nut sales, pancake breakfasts, T-Shirt sales, food sales, quarter auction, car washes and a dog wash) we still need considerable funds to transport, house and feed the 5 teams, 22 students and 2 coaches for the 5 day competition in Knoxville Tennessee.
Our community is made up of 3 rural small towns, Bourbon, Tippecanoe and Etna Green. These three communities have a combined population of about 2500. We have tapped the local businesses and community but still need help to be able to send all teams on.
What a wonderful experience this will be for our kids to participate in a global competition! Please help us to show them that all their hard work has paid off
