Community Harvest of Davis is run entirely by volunteers. We are lucky to have plentiful home gardens of generous folks in town. We have community picking events to harvest fruit at the homes of local families that is too much for them to eat and donate it to agencies that feed people in need. In 6 years we have harvested over 200,000 pounds of fresh fruit to provide to those who are food insecure.
But we have worn down our own old cars carrying such heavy loads and we need a van to shlepp nurishing fruit to those in need!
We provide fruit to Davis agencies, primarily STEAC (Short Term Emergency Aid Committee), with any excess going to the Yolo County Food Bank and to local churches and food pantries. Community Harvest provides 100% of the fresh fruit available at STEAC.
Starting in Summer 2014 and continuing in 2015 Community Harvest distributed almost 5,000 pounds of produce and melons from John Whitcombe’s urban farm. Offering this assistance, we need the ability to transport from field to fork.
Yolo Food Bank will sell us a 2003 Dodge RAM B3500 (well maintained with 60,000 miles) for $5,000. A bargain! (We also need gas and insurance, etc., so our goal is $8,000.)
Please help us get healthy food, free from neighbors’ back yard, to those in need.
The fruit is free. The truck isn’t.
We thank the sponsors who kicked off this campaign!
