BENEFITING: COMMUNITY IN ACTION RIO INC
In 2012, Community in Action (CiA) established a partnership with the Center for Digital Inclusion (CDI), another non-profit organization that has provided Internet access and education to 1.45 million people worldwide since 1995. CDI operates in low-income communities who fall symptom to economic, social, and digital exclusion and currently manages 717 Digital Inclusion Sites in 12 countries. In Rio de Janeiro alone, CDI has established more than 65 computer labs since its inception, training tens of thousands of marginalized residents in the favelas.
Through the CiA-CDI Computer literacy program partnership, more than 700 underserved students in the Complexo de Alemão will participate in a yearlong computer literacy program called “Connecting Rio’s Youth.” The program began in August 2012 and will continue throughout 2013. Students will receive training surrounding: Word, Power Point, Excel, Blogging, Internet Research, Video Editing, and more. Many courses focus on case studies with associated tools, where students learn how to use IT resources in practical scenarios.
We need your help to sustain and expand this Program. Our goal is to raise $5,000!
Community in Actions’ activities are already making a positive impact in the region:
- Local Schools: Community in Action established partners with four local schools, reaching approximately 700 students through computer training, who would otherwise not have access to IT literacy classes: Approximately 40 computer classes will be offered per week.
- “Connecting Rio’s Youth” Implementation Team: More than 30 stakeholders have invested time into this effort and are striving to make this program a success. The entire Community in Action team, school directors / administrators / teachers, and a selected group of CDI staff are all hopeful that “Connecting Rio’s Youth” will continue beyond this pilot phase: The CDI technical team set up computer labs with Internet and software programs, delivering 40+ refurbished computers with all accessories to the schools.
- Computer Teachers and Curriculum: Community in Action selected two local residents (in their mid-20s) to become the primary teachers for “Connecting Rio’s Youth” during the first pilot, which provides an excellent educational and career development opportunity: The teachers have already completed a one month orientation/training session at the CDI headquarters to define curriculum, and will continue to receive training throughout the life of this program.
