THE STORY:

I am fundraising for Community Water Solutions, an NGO that I will be volunteering with starting this February.  CWS sets up water purification businesses in small villages in Northern Ghana. They have a simple business plan and after they train local women to run their operation, they turn over the business to those Ghanaian women. Besides the obvious benefits of having a clean and sustainable source of drinking water, this business brings extra income, which is often used to educate children, and respect to the women who run it.

In CWS's first three years, they have provided a permanent source of safe drinking water to approximately 15,400 people, including over 3,000 children in twenty-six villages in the northern region of Ghana.

The importance of providing clean drinking water is hard to overstate. 900 million people in the world have no access to clean drinking water and 700 thousand Africans die each year from preventable waterborne diseases. Children are especially vulnerable. On top of the loss of life, those that collect water have a ceaseless and thankless job that disrupts their education, agricultural practices, and other productive uses of their time. This makes it even more difficult to escape the poverty they have grown up with.

If I did not whole-heartedly believe that this was a cause worth pursuing, I would not be asking you to support this organization. I am trying to raise money for everyday operating costs within CWS, as a way of giving back to an organization that is doing so much good, on a comparative tiny budget.

CWS stands apart from other water-purification projects because they use a simple, sustainable means of water purification. Because the systems are technologically basic, repair costs are low. Perhaps most importantly, CWS is committed to having a year round monitoring program.  This ensures that each community continues to have the support of CWS even after implementation.

I will be volunteering with CWS in Tamale, Ghana for three months and will be working with the country director. I will be visiting the villages and will see first hand how CWS introduces a reliable source of clean water in many communities. This kind of transparency is really rare in 'development' projects - I will actually be able to send you pictures and interviews from those people that your money is helping if you choose to donate!

Anything you decide to give will go directly to supporting the intra-Ghana transportation costs of CWS. A big reason CWS is so successful in implementing their water purification techniques is that they have a constant monitoring presence in the area. Your money will ensure that they have the ability to visit the 26 villages they monitor!

If you decide to contribute anything, please email me and I will put you on my mailing list of people I need to keep updated with progress, pictures and stories.
