THE STORY:

Re: COMPUTER LITERACY AT GIRL'S ORPHANAGE SCHOOL - SQUASH TOURNAMENT FUNDRAISER

There are more than 11 million abandoned children in India, where a growing number of newborn babies are being dumped anonymously in cots placed outside orphanages. About 90% of those abandoned are girls whose poor young mothers cannot afford to keep them.

Sevamandir (which translates to 'Temple of Service') started out as an orphanage for girls in Port novo, a rural impoverished part of south India. In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi laid the foundation stone for this school. My dearest grand-aunt, Miss Mary Chakko, who was an important influence in my life, devoted her life to running, raising funds and growing the school. The school has grown to over 1400 children and now includes a Teacher Training Institute. Since her passing away in 1997, the school is no longer well funded and gets by on aid from a Danish Christian Society and some help from the local government. In order to better prepare the girls to stand on their own feet, I would like to raise funds to set up basic computing facilities and training programs so the girls can get introduced to the basics of computers.

If nothing is altered, the orphan children face a bleak future as beggars or menial laborers, in case no families or shelters are found for them. The children, for no fault of their own, will continue to be deprived of a normal life. These girls are very bright and active, participating in Inter-school sports, doing their own chores like cooking, cleaning etc at Sevamandir. If only we can share our blessings with these unfortunate kids, we are giving them an opportunity to kickstart a great life for themselves too.

Our community of squash players and friends will participate in a novelty squash tournament to be played with wooden racquets (from the 1980s!). Each participant will reach out to their independent network of friends and colleagues to help raise money to help better educate the girls at Sevamandir orphanage.

To help execute on the plan, we're currently exploring partnerships with local NGOs in the area as well as OLPC (One Laptop Per Child).

IMPORTANT NOTE:

ALL MONEYS DONATED WILL BE USED SOLELY TOWARD HELPING THE ORPHANAGE i.e. NO PORTION OF YOUR DONATIONS WILL BE USED TO ORGANIZE THE SQUASH TOURNAMENT

MSAADA is the non-profit 501c3 entity that will collect the donated funds and facilitate Tax Receipts for all donors. MSAADA is an architectural non-profit firm; they had helped rebuild portions of dining hall and dormitories at Sevamandir orphanage many years ago.
