We live in a world of technology. I have been working with Dunedin First United Methodist Church for a couple of years, as my mom is the Children’s Director. Last year, Dunedin started ministering to a group of Micronesians that live in the Tampa/Clearwater area. You might be thinking, what is a Micronesian. Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania that lies between the Philippines and Hawaii and encompasses more than 2,000 islands, most of which are small and many of which are found in clusters.
50% of the children who participate with the church are from Micronesia and 80% of them are on “free lunch” program through the local school systems. With this influx of new ministry, the church has experienced a technology concern. They have 10 very, very old computers that run on Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2003. My experience with the different systems has been highly frustrating as they are very slow. I’ve worked to improve a few of their systems, but the truth is they just need newer computers.
I’m on a mission to find companies willing to partner with the church to raise money to purchase new computer systems. These do not need to be top of the line systems, but since they have not had new computers in over 15 years, I want to get ones that will last a long time. If there is one thing I know churches do not invest in technology for two reasons: cost and the need to meet more personal needs of the church members is too great. We are looking to raise $5,000.00 to purchase 10 new computers and upgrade Microsoft Office.
