BENEFITING: THE SPORTS LEGACY INSTITUTE INC
EVENT DATE: May 12, 2017
The Concussion Legacy Foundation is dedicated to advancing the study, treatment and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups. This will be my second half marathon- the first I did not partake in any fundraising efforts, so I am looking forward to this. Concussions is something I know about all too well. I came out to the United States from England in 2011 to play NCAA D1 college soccer, having never received a concussion in my life (or atleast not that I knew of). In the last 6 years, I have picked up 6 concussions- some of them clearing up in days, others putting me out of action and work for weeks on end. My last one, in October 2016, left me extremely worried and saw me quit competitive soccer for good. I could not work, socialize, or exercise due to symptoms such as heavy fatigue & headaches. It was a terrible period, and with the lack of knowledge and understanding around concussions, I thought I would never be the same again. Luckily for me, I managed to pull round and today I am back to a normal life. Unfortunately, others are not so lucky. While concussions in soccer are common, they are much more frequent in football & hockey. It is a subject I hate thinking about and talking about because of my fear around injuring the brain, especially after hearing about some of the terrible consequences that it has had on others. The brain is extremely valuable and fragile- something which I have taken for granted until the experiences I have gone through. It would be great if you could contribute to this fundraiser so we can collectively help raise awareness and safety around this silent injury.
100% of donations will go to the foundation. Thank you!
