BENEFITING: ASTELLA DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION
EVENT DATE: Jan 01, 2013
As has been tradition for time immemorial, on New Year's Day thousands of New Yorkers will ring in the New Year by taking a dip in the Atlantic Ocean on the shores of Coney Island.
This year, the Coney Island New Year's Day Polar Plunge is even more important than ever. To be hosted 64 days after Super Storm Sandy devastated the area, this year's New Year's Plunge is an opportunity to reflect on the relief efforts to date, and raise awareness for the recovery ahead.
Coney Island will be back and better than ever. But we will need your help to recover. Coney Island is not just an amusement area—it's a neighborhood of some 50,000 residents, approximately 1,000 small businesses, many not-for-profit and faith-based organizations, and more. As we work to comprehensively address the many needs—from the Ocean to the Creek—this year's Coney Island New Year's Day Polar Plunge is an opportunity to raise awareness and resources for the tasks ahead.
The Coney Island Polar Bear Club has for many years also raised money for Camp Sunshine, a wonderful organization that supports children who are facing life-threatening illness and their families. Please visit their page at http://www.crowdrise.com/ConeyIslandPolarDip.
The Club has graciously offered to also open up this year's swim as a fundraiser for local recovery efforts: #ConeyRecovers. All donations through this page will go directly to #ConeyRecovers. Our fiscal sponsor is Astella Development Corporation, a 37-year-old local community development organization, which is part of the #ConeyRecovers team.
Challenge your friends; challenge yourself! Ring in 2013 with a dip in the water at Coney Island, and help us support recovery efforts at the same time.
Registration begins at 10am. Plunge at 1pm sharp.
Meet at Stillwell Avenue and the Boardwalk.
Parking is available at Gargiulo's Restaurant Parking Lot (at W. 15th Street and Surf Avenue) and the New York Aquarium (at W. 8th Street and Surf Avenue).
