This journey began with the Facebook post of a dear friend. "Please pray for Cera." My heart dropped. Cera is my friend's darling daughter who survived a rare form of leukemia several years ago. When I read her post, I feared the worst. I called her immediately, and what she told me broke my heart. Cera's cancer wasn't back, thank god. But, the damage permanently done to her hair was starting to be noticed more and more by Cera, and unfortunately by her peers. The stares, questions, and comments were tearing down her self-confidence and eroding her excitement about entering middle school. It left one of the sweetest, kindest, most fun loving children I have ever met in tears. And so, Confidence Closet was born. Each year, starting with Cera, we will sponsor cancer recovering or recovered children to have a back to school makeover. We will teach them how to style their new look and let their inner light shine through the shell the world sees. The makeover will include a shopping trip with a personal stylist to pick out a first day of school outfit, a session with a hair stylist to have their hair styled and to learn how to do their hair with extensions or wigs as needed, a session with a makeup artist, and a professional photo shoot with a published photojournalist. By giving to Confidence Closet, you can help provide Cera, and other children like her, the confidence they need to rebuild their self-image, face the world, and move on.
