The Long Story
May 08, 2017
On May 6th I will be taking on the Rock the Ridge Endurance Challenge. 50 miles, 7,4,57 feet of elevation (both up and down). The course follows the carriage roads of Mohonk Preserve and the adjoining Minnewaska State Park. My plan is to hike up the mountains, run down and run as long as far as I can on the flats taking walk breaks as needed. In the end I will do what I have to do, run, walk, crawl.... I've been training all winter but with all of these kinds of events, race day has its own plans -- all you can do is prepare, do your best and hope the rce Gods smile favorably..
If you haven't been to the Shawangunk Mountains and the Mohonk preserve I really encourage you to do so. (I will be HAPPY to take you!) It's 8,000 acres with beautiful carriage trails, hiking trails, rocky cliffs, lakes and amazing vistas of the mid Hudson valley. The Nature Conservancy has described this area as “one of Earth’s last great places.” This challenge is a fundraiser to support the Mohonk Preserve and their award-winning conservation science, environmental education, and land protection and stewardship programs. Now, more than ever, we have to step up and protect our land.
This past weekend I was out on the Mohonk preserve trails thinking about how over the last 11 years they have seen me through training for Ironman, Marathon des Sables, Grand to Grand, Rock the Ridge and countless other races. Saturday was my last big long run before May 6th. (I have one more two-hour run but believe it or not that's no longer considered long!) The mountains have heard me cry through tough times and laugh on adventures with friends. They have watched me come back again and again sometimes weaker, sometimes stronger but hopefully always a little wiser. I've been training hard but more important, I've been working on my outlook. I am truly blessed to be 57 and still tackling these adventures and no matter how long it takes me I have wonderful friends and family who are always there to support my chronic bouts of epicitis.
I want to do something big with my fundraising this year. I want to do more than just cover the minimum (I did that myself already). I feel now more than ever we have to step up and support the world we love. I love these mountains, this preserve. Any weekend you will see all types of people hiking, rock climbing, bouldering, skiing, biking it's a wonderful place and it needs to be preserved.
100% tax deductible for you, 100% motivation for me. I appreciate your support.
