THE STORY:

When parents are deported, their U.S.-born children have two "choices" -- leave with their parents or stay in foster care to continue availing of educational opportunities here. A California non-profit wants to help those children who stay with their deported parents by providing them with educational opportunities, site-based and distance learning, so that they can acquire Spanish as a second language if needed and also continue to make progress in all others fields of study in English. The first learning center will be located in Tijuana, Mexico, near the ramp that U.S. uses to remove undocumented people. The curriculum will be standards-based and will be supplemented with Social Studies material taken from official Mexican textbooks. Parents will be encouraged to be actively involved in their children's education and welcome to visit and assist in the classroom as often as they are able to. Our curriculum is values-based and it has been designed to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our teaching model emphasizes "learning by doing" and encourages the development of active, inquisitive learners. Sponsorships are needed in order to be able to provide partial or full scholarships to as many children as possible.
