The Official Cops For Kids With Cancer Boston Marathon Team
On April 20th I have the privilege of running the 119th Boston Marathon with my good friend Patrick McEvoy. While I imagine stepping to the starting line of my first marathon will be a bit daunting, I will know that, as a member of the Cops For Kids With Cancer 2015 Boston Marathon Team, my efforts will be in support of a truly great cause.
Last year nearly 16,000 kids aged 0-19 were diagnosed with some form of cancer in the United States. While cancer in children remains rare, it is currently the leading cause of death by disease among children in the U.S. according to the National Cancer Institute. Unfortunately these numbers continue to rise as incidences of invasive cancer are up 29% in the last 20 years. Cancer currently takes the lives of more children that AIDS, asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and congenital anomalies combined.
Children should be out enjoying their youth, not battling a horrific disease. But the horrors of cancer extend far beyond that notion of a childhood being taken away. When a child is inflicted with cancer, that diagnosis often has a far reaching impact on the child’s entire family. The emotional impact on the child and family is immense, as are the mounting medical bills and expenses associated with treatment. Often times this results in a parent leaving their job to help care for their child, and the loss of an income can have a devastating effect on the family.
Cops For Kids With Cancer is a true 501C3 non-profit organization that is focused on alleviating some of the stresses for families facing these challenges. As an entirely volunteer run organization, they can be sure that all donations are going to improve to lives of the families fighting cancer. Donations from CFKWC have helped save families from eviction, helped pay down overwhelming bills, and paid to repair the only vehicle a family had to travel back and forth to the hospital. In the last 5 years, CFKWC has given to 280 families in and around Massachusetts in an attempt to help them through their struggle.
While I will most definitely be struggling along the 26.2 mile course in April, it doesn’t compare to the daily battle the kids and their family wage against cancer. I would be honored if you would consider joining my marathon team and making a donation in support of this cause. Your donations will make an immeasurable difference in the lives of these families and I truly appreciate you support. I hope to see you all along the course on April 20th!
