Running for Cancer Research

The New York City Marathon is quite an event. This will be my first year running it - and my first marathon - but I have witnessed the celebrations for the past two years. The outpouring of support and cheers from New Yorkers in all five boroughs make it unique, exciting and undoubtedly emotional.

It's no wonder the event attracted more then 140,000 applicants for less than 50,000 spots this year. Fortunately, I participated in the New York Road Runners Club 9+1 program in 2011. By running nine races and volunteering at one event, I was able to secure my spot to run the 26.2 miles from Staten Island, through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, and ending in Manhattan on November 4, 2012.

There are four ways to run in the New York City Marathon: qualifying based on your previous marathon times, 9+1, lottery drawing, or running for a team. Running for a team usually involves some fundraising. Even though my entry was guaranteed automatically, it seems like it would be a lost opportunity if I didn't raise some money as well. The knowledge that I am running for a worthwhile cause will help lighten my steps and give me a bit of a tailwind.

The Fred Hutchinson Research Center in Seattle was founded in 1975. It is a nonprofit, independent research foundation that has helped pioneer methods of detection, treatment and prevention of many cancers, HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Researchers at Fred Hutchinson helped develop the HPV vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, blood cell treatments for leukemia and bone marrow transplants, among others.

Cancer, unfortunately, has touched most of our lives. There is still a long road to understanding cancerous cell growth and its prevention. Your contribution will help researchers work toward a better understanding of cancer, its prevention and treatment. It will also help me run with a deeper purpose. Thank you for your support!
