Why do I run? More specifically, why do I run 26.2 miles every year? People ask me how long I’ll keep doing it; won’t my knees give out; why not just donate money?
So while I was running - where I do my best thinking - I explored the question. It’s true, I could write a check each year and save the wear and tear on my body. I could run short distances instead and not drive my family and friends crazy for four months. I would save money not buying shoes, shorts, gatorade (ugh), hotel rooms and entry fees. All of that could be donated to CdLS.
Then this happened.
My older daughter, Sequoya announced she wanted to do Big Sur 12K, that would be the longest distance for her. So we trained in the winter - thank goodness for the ‘dreadmill’. We completed the 12K together and I couldn’t have been a more proud mom. We have since done a 10K together and she has declared she wants to do the Big Sur 11 miler in 2018.
But wait, it gets better.
Tanaya walked in after my one of my runs and asked, “How many miles mom?” She then proceeded to tell me in her ‘Tanayaspeak’, her workout plans for the week, which included ‘doing incline’. As an aside, she equates -1 to increasing the hill incline, so cute. She told all the relatives about her 5K with mom and how she ran the last mile (0.2 miles) and never stopped.
What an incredible touchstone for me to run/walk with my daughters as they explore how far their potential will go. Helping others with CdLS achieve their potential is an added bonus.
That is why I run marathons.
Please help me help them by donating to CdLS. Any and all amounts are welcome. For online donations, click on the DONATE button.
