THE STORY:

Cory Pontious wrote -

Corbin "Cory" Pontious

Cory started his distance running as the youngest runner (15) in a marathon honoring our veterans in the small town of Columbia City, Indiana.  After exceeding his goal with a time of 3:51:46, he immediately set a stretch goal to qualify for the Boston Marathon.  Just after turning 17, Cory was able to accomplish his Boston qualifier goal by placing second in his age group with an impressive time of 3:02:59 at the Traverse City Bayshore Marathon in chilly Northern Michigan.

Now, the time for Boston has finally arrived.  For his third marathon, Cory will once again be one of the youngest runners in Boston on April 21st, but he is motivated now more than ever before.  For this marathon, Cory is not running just for himself.

He’s dedicated the race to a very special young boy named Joseph as part of the Run for the Kids Who Can’t initiative.  Joseph is an 11 year old boy who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy when he was five years old.

Duchenne is a degenerative muscle disease that first attacks the arms and legs, eventually attacking the essential organs like the heart and lungs. Most boys lose mobility around their early teen years and are wheelchair bound from then on. Typically they don't live to see their college graduation. Currently, there is no treatment and no cure.

However for the first time, research is on the brink of finding a treatment and it's essential that research continues to be funded. Team Joseph (www.TeamJoseph.info) is a non-profit organization founded by Marissa Penrod, Joseph's mother. Since its creation, Team Joseph has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars funding research at some of the best universities in the country.

Please join us in cheering Joseph and Cory on to victory as they support each other via Run for the Kids Who Can’t at the 2014 Boston Marathon.  Thanks, and we'll see you all at mile marker 26.2!
