Fabien Cousteau, grandson of the legendary ocean explorer, Jacques –Yves Cousteau launched The Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center (“OLC”) earlier this year. Fabien learned the importance of ocean conservation from the best and as a member of the “first family” of ocean environmentalists, he is continuing that work. With a mission to inspire all citizens of our earth to become stewards of preserving, restoring and protecting our ocean waters, this exciting organization requires funding for both education and marine restoration programs.
One program in particular is in El Salvador where he is saving the sea turtle population. Compared to other developing countries, El Salvador has experienced relatively low rates of GDP growth in the last two decades and its current market economy is under siege. This has resulted in the illegal traffic of sea turtle eggs, and coupled with the high demand coming from larger cities, has caused a drastic reduction of sea turtles populations. This loss in sea turtles is now being reversed through Fabien’s intervention and education with those in the local community. Not only has he been able to save over 700,000 sea turtle eggs from illegal market and released 680,000 hatchings into the ocean in the past three years, but in doing so he has also provided alternative means of earning an income to the local fisherman. By saving these precious marine animals and increasing their presence in the waters of the local ecosystem, they maintain and restore the balance needed for a sustainable food chain to keep the local fisherman in business.
Fabien Cousteau together with the OLC team continue their efforts in sea turtle restoration. They expect to keep increasing these unprecedented numbers of baby sea turtles released and eggs saved, expanding their successful program to other locations including, but not limited, to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Florida and Maldives.
The OLC has additional programs ready to put in place around the globe: coral reef and mangrove restoration programs as well as partnerships with Coastal and Marine Life Education and Stewardship programs. The goal is to provide a knowledgebase to students as well as the general population that will foster respect for our oceans and teach students how to care for our coastal waters. Fabien and his team will create and support activities from beach clean ups to collecting data for critical research for sustaining healthy waters.
Here’s how you can help: You have the chance or even several chances to help make a difference and preserve the beauty and health of ALL waterfront destinations, not only for the tourism trade but to also help coastal communities who are so dependent on a vibrant and clean ocean for their livelihood!
The winner will also have a live conversation with Fabien who will provide the general background on the trip, the location, and of course how your donation will help The Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center and the Sea Turtle Program.
Have a look at where you can enjoy the beauty of our earth’s waters and make a difference in protecting our oceans now and for future generations!
