THE STORY:

Please donate to Citizen Schools if you want to:

  • Make a difference in the future of 5,000 inner city youth per year, like Todd's student, Schuyler (see photo)
  • Support an organization which has a proven track record for results (MCAS scores, grades, college matriculation rates, etc)
  • Contibute to a cause that Todd and Kristen are passionate about, and have supported for 20 years

The Longer Version:

We have been fortunate to have grown up in safe environments with quality education, excellent role models and financial resources. Unfortunately, millions of kids are developing in the opposite environment and jeopardizing our country's future. It is difficult to believe that today in Boston's inner city, only 51% of students graduate high school in four years (59% ever graduate)!

Citizen Schools is turning around this situation, one student and one school at time. It focuses on providing expanded learning time for middle schools, the age when children typically get off track. Partnering with inner city public schools, Citizen Schools brings in a second shift of educators, expanding learning in traditional subjects, as well as engaging students in ten week apprenticeships taught by volunteers from a variety of professions.

Recently, we were struck by hearing a former Citizen Schools student tell the story of how the organization changed his life. He grew up in Boston, in a community overrun by gangs and in an environment where there was little appreciation for education. Most of the adults in the community worked in a narrow range of jobs, such as bus drivers or sanitation workers, which are all fine jobs. However, the kids could not see how education was important given the professions they saw before them.

Fortunately, this sixth grader met teachers from Citizen Schools and enrolled in a Mock Trial apprenticeship. It sparked his interest in becoming a lawyer. The organization also encouraged him to apply for a Charter High School and he benefited from other apprenticeship programs and coaching from Citizen Schools. The experience has really paid off for him. He is now in law school with a bright future ahead of him!

This is not an isolated story. Citizen Schools has had a dramatic impact on grades, standardized test scores, graduation rates and other factors (see www.citizenschools.org for more information). As a result, schools are turning to Citizen Schools to extend the learning time for 3+ hours for all their students. Thousands of people are volunteering around the country and numerous companies are supporting the organization, such as Bank of America and Fidelity Investments.  Despite this broad support, the organization is only scratching the surface given the magnitude of the need. We need your help!

We have been helping Citizen Schools make a difference for over a decade, and Todd is currently through serving on the Massachusetts Council of Champions. We hope you will join us in making an impact in these childrens' future through supporting Citizen Schools.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
