BENEFITING: CITIZEN SCHOOLS INC
ORGANIZER: CITIZEN SCHOOLS INC
As some of you know (well, all of you, if you're already on this page!), I have worked with Citizen Schools for the last few years in different volunteer roles. I have participated in one-time events, taught two apprenticeships in Chelsea, and, most recently, joined the Council of Champions in an effort to become more involved. I absolutely believe in this organization and want to do all I can to further their mission.
*But Barbara, what IS Citizen Schools' mission?* I'll tell ya!
Citizen Schools’ mission is to educate children and to strengthen communities. Established in Boston in 1995, Citizen Schools strives to close the achievement and opportunity gaps for low-income middle school students by extending the learning day and filling the additional time with rigorous academic skill-building, hands-on apprenticeship courses and curriculum designed to prepare students to succeed in top-tier high schools and colleges.
There are so many ways to get involved, including (but most certainly not limited to):
(1) volunteering at a one-off event,
(2) teaching a 10-week apprenticeship,
(3) getting your employer to sponsor a 10-week apprenticeship,
(4) and yes, making a tax-deductible donation right here!
I am incredibly lucky to work across the street from my partner school. I see the students on a regular basis. I have had students come up to me during the summer on my coffee runs to tell me how much they miss apprenticeships. I have seen them grow, physically and mentally. They are incredible kids, and working with them has taught me more about myself than I thought possible. On a larger scale, these programs have been shown to increase enrollment in and graduation from both high school and college. They also help the students become more confident individuals. With your support, you can help these students continue their personal and educational journeys! I ask (and encourage) you to make a donation and contact me on ways to get more involved! Are you passionate about something? Teach an apprenticeship! Are you a great writer who wants to help someone else find their voice? Become a writing coach! Are you a busy person who wants to give a few hours to help enhance a child's future? We have lots of one-off events! You can either contact me directly (I love talking about Citizen Schools!) or visit http://www.citizenschools.org/ to find out more information.
Thank you so much for your support, both here and in my personal ventures with Citizen Schools!
