Corynna Strawser is a 16-year-old girl who fought Mitochondrial disease with beauty and grace before passing in December of 2013. Even though her journey was hard, she kept an unbelievably, positive attitude and felt that educating people about mitochondrial disease is an important part of her legacy. The inspiration she brought upon her community was more than can be put into words. Mitochondrial disease changed her life in so many ways.
It was just years ago that Corynna was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, for which there is no cure. The disease is genetic in nature and results from failures of the specialized compartments in every cell in the body except red blood cells. The mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90 percent of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. Cell injury occurs along with the death of the cells. The body’s systems begin to fail and the patient’s health is severely compromised. The disease primarily affects children, but adult onset is also becoming more and more common.
Recently, the Corynna Strawser Research Fund was set up through the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. This is a huge step in Corynna's wish to bring awareness and increase research for this terrible disease. Once the research fund reaches $10,000, Corynna and her family will have the ability to direct the funds to the area of research the feel most necessary. In an effort to assure Corynna's legacy, myself and a friend signed up to participate in the Ironman 70.3 in Muncie, Indiana. This is a first for both of us, but we are up for the challenge. From now until July of 2014, we will be training and lobbying for donations to reach our goal of $10,000. Ideally we want to grossly overshoot our goal, but at the minimum we want to assure that the Corynna Strawser Research Fund is fully funded. This is want Corynna wants.
This fundraiser is a "versus" type campaign. A friendly challenge between Team Pierri and Team Garrett. Each team will raise as much money as possible all the way up until Ironman weekend. At this time the team that raised the most money will be awarded "x" amount of time to deduct from their final race time. Sort of a handicap. The winner of the triathlon will be decided by official recorded times minus the awarded time. The loser of the triathlon will then donate an undecided amount of personal funds to the charity/organization of the winners choice. In addition to basic donations, both of us encourage the idea of creative side wagers that are paid only when we accomplish certain things such as simply finishing this crazy thing, beating a certain time/pace, etc.
Please help us bring the Corynna Strawser Research Fund to life so that it will impact Mitochondrial Disease Research. The more we raise the more we can help.
