Courage of One will be a tax-exempt not-for-profit organization that serves nationally with a primary focus within Broward County/Miami-Dade County. Courage of One's goal is to assist single mothers within these counties who are experiencing financial problems, homelessness, transportation issues, daycare, divorces, educational barriers and hunger. Courage of One will be soliciting, collecting, growing, and packaging food for distribution through a network of service agencies and programs that serve our target population groups. Our services include food box programs, resources for education, rental assistance, emergency food programs, and a 20 unit apartment complex that will provide temporary shelter for single mothers that are displaced for a 90 day program that provides opportunities for self-sufficiency activities. Courage of One will receive support from the county, charitable organizations private donors, grants and corporate sponsorship.
Approximately 40% of single mothers within Broward County/Miami-Dade County will qualify for assistance from Courage of One. Our client base will be low-income people, mainly families, who need emergency help to put food on the table, job placement, counseling and self sufficiency. Nearly half of those served by the program will be single mothers with children under the age of 16 years old and range between 23-40 years in age. Courage of One will operate a warehouse facility where we store donated food, clothing, shoes, technology, furniture, household items for distribution. The program actively solicits food from local food growers, retailers, wholesalers, and processors. In addition, Courage of One will have a daily drive to collect food donations from restaurants for immediate distribution to service programs.
It is estimated that the number of children who need services from Courage of One will increase during the next five years. Broward County/Miami-Dade County is growing and a number of new families are entering the area to look for employment. A number of programs exist to help transition these new families into the county. Courage of One is an important resource to these programs because we can respond quickly with a shorter waitlist and transportation to the apartment complex which will be one of the most important resources these families need; food and shelter.
Our services improve the ability of families to care for children and achieve goals of self-sufficiency. Courage of One's services, now, is a small investment in comparison to cost of ignoring the problem of hunger in these counties and the influence it has on a number of health and crime issues.
